In her new album "London Ko," Fatoumata Diawara continues to revolutionize traditional African music, taking us on a journey back to her Mandinka roots, as she did in projects like "Maliba" and "Le Voldu Boli" with Abderrahmane Sissako.
Her latest album, "Fenfo, "allowed her to truly craft her own style, earning her Grammy and Victoiresde la Musique nominations in 2019. Redefining the rules, Fatou leads us back into her eclectic, avant-garde world. With the various musical colors she brings (afrobeat, jazz, pop, electro, andevenhip hop), it's impossible to box "London Ko" into a single genre.
In "London Ko," without forsaking tradition, Fatoumata Diawara's music offers us a prophetic vision of what Africa can achieve. She creates an alternative space and time where becoming the master of one's destiny is possible. Positioning herself as an actorin a future world, this album elevates Fatoumata Diawara to the ranks of the great voices of Afrofuturism.

"I put all my love, my soul, and my body into the creative process for this album. "Now, more precise than ever in her words, she strikes a perfect balance between synthetic sounds and traditional Malian rhythms. The track" Dambe" (which can be translated as "the values of tradition") clearly sets out Fatoumata Diawara's intentions as an artist: she doesn't justcritique; she brings fresh ideas. Music is her chosen tool, and she uses it to reveal the possibility of a different relationship with time. This shift between avant-garde style and tributes to her ancestors diffuses the discords of the present. The mixture of genres can then be understood as a means of emancipation. Fatou also plays with geographic spaces, as we see in the title of the album, "London Ko." A neologism that is also symbolic of her collaboration with Damon Albarn, which gives rise to a new world, a fusion of Bamako and London. A nod to the richness of mixing, of being open to the Other, and to the importance of interculturality. Damon Albarn, a central figure in the English music world and a true connoisseur of African music, co-produced the album and features on no fewer than six tracks. "For me, 'London Ko' means opening your mind. It also represents Damon Albarn's connection to Malian music. "Fatoumata presents new imaginary worlds, as illustrated by the first track released from the album, 'Nsera,' and the explosive video by Gregory Ohrel. This is an artist who understands the true value of the graphic universe. Fatou presents an uncomplicated relationship with Africa, dismantling the unconscious collective stereotype of the continent and its diaspora. Her aesthetic invites us on a cosmic journey, moving through my thin to reality. Drawing on the internation alart is ticen counters that have shaped her journey so far, Fatoumata also invites special guests who punctuate the album, like gateways into her universe. This includes two rising stars from the African continent: Ghanaian rapper M.anifest the track "Mogokan" ("Gossip") and Nigeria's new voice in Afrobeat, Yemi Aladeon "Tolon" (a call to celebration). Fatou proves that in music, you can't just wait and believe, you have to become a driving force and a voice of empowerment. On "Somaw," we hear the African American neo-soul pioneer Angie Stone sing about the pain of distance. On "Blues, "it's Cuban piano virtuoso Roberto Fonseca, who needs no introduction, who comes in to pay tribute to those we don't see. Lastly, Fatou reunites with her old touring partner from Lamomali, -M-, (who she also worked with on "Fenfo"), for two tracks. "Massa Den" is a node to love, a delicious mix of her voice and guitar with the brilliant sounds of -M-. On the track "Sete," their resounding praise of women is elevated by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, an American choir made up of children from all backgrounds. "Working with a children's choir had been a dream of mine for a long time; now my heart is at peace. "Learn more about Fatoumata Diawara and her music on her officialwebsite and Facebookpage.
